During this decade, the choir have sung abroad on four tours: two to Italy, one to Germany and one to the Czech Republic. All have been extremely successful and enjoyable.
In April 2004, some 60 members took part in "World Sacred Music Week" organised by Accademia San Felice. We gave three performances of Mozart's Requiem - two in Florence and one in Lucca
(see the photos).
As the choir's former Chairman, Ken Spruce, said:
"It was a tremendous experience for all concerned. We extended our musical knowledge with the different demands of performing with a German youth orchestra, with German and Italian conductors and Italian soloists - not least getting used to starting a concert at 9 or 9.15 pm! It was also a wonderful opportunity to get together as friends as we also had time to relax and enjoy ourselves with sight-seeing and Italian food!" |
In March 2005, we returned to Florence and Lucca to perform Mozart's Requiem - repeated by popular demand - and the Requiem by Cherubini (see the photos).
May 2008 saw a change of venue and programme. We travelled to Cologne and nearby Altenberg in Germany where we performed in the Basilika St. Aposteln in Cologne and in the Altenberger Dom. On both occasions the two works sung were Faure's Requiem and Hadyn's Te Deum, which were most warmly received (see the photos).
Having had a taste of singing abroad to appreciative audiences, we next visited Prague and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic in May/June 2011. We were joined by members of the Derby Bach Choir and Leicester Phil. and friends of the DCU.
Prague is a delightful city with splendid architecture at every turn and Karlovy Vary is a charming spa town. We performed in the imposing St. Nicholas in the town centre of Prague and also in St. Mary Magdalene overlooking Karlovy Vary. Our audiences were enthusiastic and we enjoyed their appreciative applause (see the photos).
